DEI Student Scholarship

APTA Maryland developed this scholarship to recognize students from diverse backgrounds who are instrumental in advancing DEI within their academic program and or APTA Maryland. The scholarship supports the Chapters’ strategic plan on creating a more inclusive association that better reflects those whom we serve.

Scholarship Amount: $2000 

  • Funds will be sent direct to the University/College. Funds are for educational purposes and can be used for books, supplies, tuition, etc.

    This also includes additional funds for national and chapter membership fees covered by the chapter for 1 year following the award if the applicant fulfills the responsibilities of the scholarship.

Eligibility Requirements

  • 2nd or 3rd year DPT or PTA student in good standing and with a set graduation date (Documentation: Unofficial transcript detailing all physical therapy coursework completed to date)
  • Member of APTAMD
  • Applicant demonstrates a financial need
  • Applicant must be a US citizen or legal permanent resident and a member of one of the following:
    1. racial/ethnic minority groups: African-American or Black, Asian, Middle Eastern, Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander, American Indian/Alaska Native, and Hispanic/Latino
    2. LGTBQ+ 
    3. Individual w/ disabilities

Timeline

  • Applications are accepted June 1 – July 4 annually.

Application Process

  • A Completed application
  • Personal essay no longer than 600 words outlining your professional goals, statement of financial need, and answers 2 questions:
    o Why is diversity, equity, and inclusion in the field of physical therapy important to you?
    o How have your personal experiences impacted your decision to pursue a degree in physical therapy?
  • Completed reference forms by a faculty member, a PT/PTA clinician. Letters must speak to your leadership and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the physical therapy profession.


If selected for the award, the applicant will:

  • Maintain membership in APTAMD and participate in the APTA MD DEI Committee for a minimum of one year.
  • Contribute to the APTA MD through video, interview, or written article for Maryland PT Magazine by the end of their 2nd or 3rd year.
